Pnina: certified kosher pies

Pnina: certified kosher pies

There’s some strange paranoia at work over at the Jewish Israel site, whose writers seem rather pie-ased against the Messianic Jews.

Read Jewish Israel’s take on Pnina Konforti who runs Pnina Pie. Jewish Israel seems to interact with RPP’s post on the difference between Messianic Jews who believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, and Jews for Jesus missionaries, opining that, ‘jews for jesus tends to be more rigid in their Christian doctrine (Baptist or Southern Baptist affiliated) and many adherents to this Christian sect would not neccesarily be considered politically “pro-Israel” or “Christian zionist”. Many of the “messianic” groups are politically “pro-Israel” and are backed by “Christian zionist” evangelical organizations and congregations.’

Is this true? Clearly not – Messianic Jews have all different types of beliefs. Moreover, there are many Messianic Jews that have hostile relations with the more political Christian Zionist groups, who shun Messianic Jews in order to keep friendly relations with certain anti-Messianic ultra-Orthodox groups. Messianic Jews as individuals do not recieve financial backing from anyone, most Messianic Jews work to earn their crust, or pie, if they are allowed to.

Messianic Jewish organisations and groups may receive financial backing from supporters around the world, although an increasingly large number are financially independent. It is worth noting that there are many Jewish groups in Israel which have nothing to do with Yeshua but are nevertheless financially supported by Christian Zionist money. Some Christian groups have even signed voluntary “evangelism-gagging-orders” so that Israeli groups are able to accept their support! Moreover the  Jews for Jesus organisation are explicitly pro-Israel (its director believes, for example, that God is a Zionist).

It’s clear that Jewish Israel’s contributors don’t really know the first thing about the diversity of Messianic Jews around the world - most Messianic Jews are not missionaries or workers for Jews for Jesus, but nevermind – just stick to pie in the sky theories, and don’t let the truth get in the way of a good slander.

There are many a non-Jewish chef in kosher restaraunts around the world. So is the point that Messianic Jews shouldn’t be trusted to keep kashrut?  If that’s true, then the attempts to boycott Pnina Pie should have been effective. But they weren’t, because 1) Pnina clearly makes good pies and 2) Israelis have more common sense. But, as Jewish Israel can’t trust Israelis to stay away from Pnina Pie when the lady’s opponents put up big posters, the law must be enlisted to take away her kashrut license, but now the law is on the side of good pies they have to grumble.

It’s not that Jewish Israel don’t trust Messianic Jews. They don’t trust the Israeli public.
